Haematology controls & calibrators

Control materials and calibrators have different roles, even when supplied for the same analyser. A useful request identifies which is needed, the exact system and the required levels or assigned values. It should also account for vial size and usable life after opening. This group helps laboratories request quality materials that can be checked against their established procedures and current instrument documentation.

Useful details for your quote

  • Exact analyser and applicable reagent system
  • Control or calibrator requirement
  • Required levels and vial quantity
  • Lot-specific assigned-value documents
  • Unopened expiry and open-vial stability
  • Delivery and storage requirements
01 / Buying guidance

Keep the two roles separate

A routine control material should not be assumed suitable for calibration, or vice versa. Use the terminology in the analyser documentation and laboratory quality plan. Itemise both products where both are required, with distinct catalogue references and quantities rather than a combined QC line.

02 / Buying guidance

Check assigned values for the model

The available values and ranges can depend on analyser and reagent system. Ask for the lot-specific assay sheet and confirm that the exact model is covered. A broadly named haematology control does not guarantee that the required parameters or assigned values are provided for your instrument.

03 / Buying guidance

Choose useful levels and pack sizes

Low, normal and high descriptions need to be matched to the specific control product. Confirm which levels and how many vials the offered pack contains. For several instruments or locations, estimate how the pack will be divided and used without assuming opened-vial stability can be extended.

04 / Buying guidance

Review lot timing before ordering

Ask for remaining expiry and the stated open-vial conditions. Where your laboratory needs overlapping lots for an internal transition process, identify that purchasing requirement explicitly. Do not accept a larger quantity solely for its unit price if the material cannot be used within its labelled life.

05 / Buying guidance

Retain the right documentation

Keep assay sheets, instructions and applicable certificates linked to the supplied lot. Ask whether documents are supplied directly or obtained through the manufacturer’s portal. A quote should make the proposed product identifiable before delivery, while the receiving record confirms the actual lot and expiry.

Questions / Answers

Common questions

Are low, normal and high levels always sold together?

Pack configurations vary. State which levels and vial counts you need, and confirm the contents of the offered set.

Can a control be used as a calibrator?

Do not assume so. Calibration material must be identified for that role in the system documentation and laboratory procedure.

Why request lot-specific values?

The relevant assay sheet identifies the assigned values for that lot and applicable systems. A general brochure is not a substitute for the documents accompanying the material supplied.
