Microbiology staining supplies

A stain request should identify the method before the bottle size. This group includes Gram stain sets, Ziehl-Neelsen or Kinyoun AFB products, lactophenol cotton blue and India ink or nigrosin preparations. Some are multi-component sets; others are individual stains or mounting preparations. Keep names, formulations and presentation explicit so the quotation can be checked against the laboratory method.

Useful details for your quote

  • Staining method and full reagent or kit name
  • Complete set or named replacement component
  • Ready-to-use or concentrate, with bottle volumes
  • Manual, dropper or automated staining presentation
  • Safety data sheet and product instructions
  • Expected consumption and required expiry on receipt
01 / Buying guidance

A complete kit and a refill are different orders

For a set, request a component-by-component list with each bottle volume. For a refill, copy the full identity from the existing label, including formulation or concentration where shown. Equal bottle sizes do not necessarily reflect consumption; a laboratory may need extra decolouriser without replacing the complete set.

02 / Buying guidance

Keep AFB methods distinct

Ziehl-Neelsen, Kinyoun and fluorescent AFB products should not be collapsed into a single “TB stain” specification. Identify the method supported by the laboratory and the microscopy or staining equipment involved. Ask for the exact formulation and compatible counterstain rather than introducing a different product as an unspecified refill.

03 / Buying guidance

Match presentation to equipment

An automated stainer may require dedicated packaging, reservoirs or product references. A manual bottle with the same broad name may not fit that system. Include the stainer model for dedicated consumables and specify ordinary bench bottles separately where they are intended for manual work.

04 / Buying guidance

Identify fungal and negative-stain preparations precisely

Lactophenol cotton blue, India ink and nigrosin remain separate requirements. State whether you want a prepared reagent, replacement dropper bottle or another presentation. Do not accept colour alone as sufficient identification for an unfamiliar stain or mounting preparation.

05 / Buying guidance

Check practical details before purchase

Request instructions and safety data sheets so storage and handling arrangements can be reviewed. Ask for cap or dispenser style, outer pack quantity and proposed shelf life. Confirm that a changed container format remains manageable at the bench rather than comparing price per litre in isolation.

Questions / Answers

Common questions

Can individual bottles replace a full-set order?

Yes. Name each component and volume. Where components form a matched set, have the laboratory review compatibility before mixing products.

Should I give the stainer model?

Yes. It distinguishes dedicated consumables from general manual stains. Include any current reagent code as well.

Which safety information should I request?

Ask for the safety data sheet and instructions for the exact formulation offered, rather than a generic sheet for the stain family.
