Transport swabs & specimen packaging
Swabs, transport media and protective packaging perform different jobs, even when travelling together. A swab request needs its collection device and medium identified. A packaging request needs the primary container and journey understood. This group covers NP/OP viral transport kits, Amies or Stuart systems, specimen bags and slide mailers. Keep the receiving laboratory’s requirements attached to the request when compatibility matters.
Useful details for your quote
- Collection site and approved swab specification
- Medium type and tube volume
- Swab tip, shaft and breakpoint
- Assay or receiving-laboratory requirement
- Bag or mailer size and closure
- Complete kit contents and usable units
Viral and bacterial transport systems differ
Viral transport medium is not a generic replacement for Amies or Stuart medium. Liquid and semi-solid products have different intended uses. Give the approved medium and exact reference where known. Review an alternative’s documentation against the receiving method rather than matching only the word transport.
Read kit contents line by line
One kit may contain a swab and medium-filled tube; another contains multiple swabs or accessories. Specify the number and types needed per collection unit. Shaft length, flexibility and breakpoint may matter to the collection and tube arrangement, so photographs alone are an incomplete comparison.
Check the laboratory interface
Name the test system or receiving specification for an established workflow. Request the proposed collection product’s stated compatibility and instructions. A description mentioning PCR or culture does not establish acceptance for every assay or organism. Keep exact references with the purchasing record.
Distinguish containment from shipping compliance
Specimen bags can segregate containers and paperwork, while slide mailers protect slides differently. Neither item describes a complete external transport package by itself. Identify any specimen-shipping requirement separately and have the complete configuration reviewed by the responsible team.
Order for replenishment and storage
Request expiry and storage requirements for the exact kit. Consider usable collections per pack and how units will be issued between sites. For bags and mailers, provide dimensions and capacity; an outer-box count alone can conceal an unsuitable size or slide arrangement.
Common questions
Is VTM suitable for every molecular test?
No. Acceptance depends on the collection product and assay instructions. Include the test system and ask for documented compatibility.
Can a bag replace a specimen container?
No. It is a separate packaging component. Identify the primary container and any secondary or outer packaging in the request.
Can swabs and slide mailers share a quote?
Yes, as separate lines. Their sizes, pack units and suitability criteria differ, so the proposal should distinguish them clearly.
